* Not a sponsored post, I promise. Just thoroughly impressed.
I don’t get out much in Sydney City, not as much as I used to.
My outings these days are limited to work, the local IGA, swimming lessons, footy training and friend’s places. Friends with kids usually…
When Man suggested the Alexander he Great exhibition in town, I was a little hesitant, but we did it anyway.
I’m ashamed to admit it but I’m uncultured in this respect. Besides organising school excursions, my last intentional visit to a museum was Rembrandt in Canberra, circa 1995… Being of Greek origin however, I’d been wanting to see our all important Alexander for a long time.
I thought a visit to a museum in with kids would be like a trip through hell.
How wrong was I! Partly.
Alexander the Great may have conquered the world, but he couldn’t conquer my kids. They complained the entire way, forcing me to take in 2000 years of my Hellenic history in 15 minutes.
My kids ruined the museum experience for about 60 other paying members of the public, so we hotfooted out of there before being asked to leave.
Of course, My Man continued his journey through Hellenism…
Wandering around the rest of the museum, the kids and I found so much stuff!
Dinosaurs, skeletons, wildlife, scary stuff, things you could touch and feel, fossils and an entire section dedicated to good old fashioned get your hands dirty kind of fun. And without a screen in sight.
This was non-stop-touch-whatever you-like kind of fun. A space where they could do whatever they wanted.
Mr 4 is still talking about the scary stuff he saw.
Me? I’m still Alexander dreaming…
Do you know of any cultural experiences you can take your kids on, without either breaking the budget or tearing the place down?
Share. Please.

Both of my girls adore the museum. P2 loves the dinosaurs and funnily P1 loves the gemstones – my little diva is going to go far in life. No wonder the daycare nick named her Elizabeth Taylor. As for Alexander – I’m envisioning a Carry On style film called Alex Was Great staring Kevin Zorbo.

Bwa!! Gemstones? The kid has style!

Bahaaha I knew it! I thought he was the guy from Hercules but I just googled him to be sure. Man, have you checked him out recently? He has NOT aged well. A case of crumpet in decline I think 🙂

I have no idea I’m sorry but I am looking forward to hearing the answers. I love going to museums, but haven’t been to one since Museum of Natural History in New York in 2010. Sadly Punky is not up for the ‘cultured’ experiences just yet. Hopefully in a few years though we might be able to brave it!
#teamIBOT was here!

My boys love the museum and Scince Centre here in Brisvegas – they would go every school holidays if it was up to them. Maybe think avbout checking out what’s on at your Art Gallery or State Library? I know that up here both venues have awesome kids activites from littlies to teens and most of them are free.
Actually this has fired me up to think of something cultured to do with the boys this weekend as it will be the end of our school hols – hooray Robomum!

Well I wont be much help as I am from Melbourne but the only museum I could get my kids to was the sports museum at the MCG!

Yes! The Maritime Museum is surprisingly fun. There are heaps of interactive touchy-feely things for the kids to do, and a huge slide down to Pirate-land. It’s a little bit awesome (cos i got to use the slide too). Also, parking is cheap-cheap in Darling Harbour if you get it validated by the museum, and kids under 4 are free. It’s only expensive if you take them on the actual ships. Ships? Pah. I think it only cost me about $13 for me, and little A was free.

Booking it in for the hols!! They love going in the train and that would be a full morning out. Pirate slide, here I come! Thanks buddy!

Have you been to the newington armoury near the Olympic park – it’s meant to be quite interesting. Additionally blaxland riverside park is right next to it (i was checking out the park today) has an awesome playground.
